How the dream became a reality

The Mudcastle is a story of destiny that began when Kevin and Glenys met each other on February the 3rd, 1990. Only six weeks after that first meeting, they bought an unwanted triangle of undulating gorse and scrub in the country with a vision to build.

Interestingly, the real estate listing read "Rural building site. Just a few kilometres from Moutere Highway, almost 1 acre pleasant undulation contour. Elevated soothing pastoral views. Groundcover mostly fern and some pines, nothing a match couldn't clear." Oh, really?

 What we bought

Dear Glennys

My apologies for not emailing you sooner.
Helen and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to your beautiful home – and the people in our group are still talking about it. Everyone was just so overwhelmed by what you two had achieved, and all the obvious hard work you have put in to achieve your dream. You must be so proud. We felt extremely privileged to be guests in your home, and you treated us all like Kings and Queens. On the way back into Nelson we stopped at the oldest pub for a drink, and our fellow travelers were all still buzzing about The Mudcastle and it's beauty.

I had deliberately not told my group much about The Mudcastle – as I wanted to really "wow" them. And I certainly wasn't disappointed. You definitely exceeded my expectations – and after all our previous emails and phone conversations, with the welcome I received that day, I really felt that I was visiting a treasured friend.

And the weather that turned itself on that day was just the icing on the cake.

The lunch you served that day was delicious and really impressed everyone. Such wonderful fresh ingredients, and so beautifully served.

I took lots of photos and tried to tell my husband (when we got home) what a wonderful place you had, and how you had built it. I honestly don't think that anyone can comprehend the magnitude of the project you two undertook, unless you actually see it in person. I definitely intend to bring my husband to stay there one day !!

I hope that you have given some more thought to perhaps (definitely) writing a book about the Mudcastle – it is such a fabulous story, and so inspirational to others. You both had a dream, and you made that dream happen.

It's also a true testimony to you (as a couple) considering what a short time you had been together, before you undertook such a mammoth task ! Working together like you have would surely have broken many couples, although in your case, it obviously made you stronger. (although I am sure that they must have been many "moments" along the way !).

I guess for outsiders like Helen and myself – we were so inspired by what you had done – and our "marketing" radars went into full alert, dreaming up all the possibilities to market you. That night back at our hotel we imagined endless possibilities.

I guess you are so close to it, and have been working at it for so long, that sometimes you don't realize what a fabulous asset you have.

It must be lovely to always have people "fresh" eyes visiting you and complimenting you on what you have achieved.

Anyway .... I've probably waffled on long enough now. I guess I just can't get you out of my thoughts – I was so inspired by what you had done, and once again I want to congratulate you both.

Please keep in touch and let me know if you do decide to go ahead and write the book. I will definitely purchase the first copy !!!

Warm regards,
